Pleats wowed the runways in Paris, New York and Milan for Spring/Summer 2014.  As you can imagine, long formal dresses are a perfect palette on which designers could play with the trend. La Femme and Riva and others interpret pleats in their lines this season, inspired by history as well as runways.

Mon Cheri channels Marilyn Monroe in its pleated long gown

Marilyn Monroe wore the most iconic pleated dress in the last 100 years. Remember the “Subway Dress” from the Seven Year Itch? Mon Cheri captures that same glamour with its v neck pleated evening dress. This long formal gown isn’t available in Marilyn’s white, but is just as fabulous in rose, royal blue or turquoise. The pleated chiffon delicately defines the waistband, criss cross v neck bodice and floor length skirt for a on trend, feminine formal look in sizes 4-20.

Riva modern long pleated formal dress

Riva blends current formal trends this season mixing sheer panels and pleats. You could call this evening gown one shoulder, but sheer panels embellished with pearls actually create this sleeveless jewel neck dress. The low cut back is also covered with sheer navy fabric dotted with pearls that fastens at the neck to create a back keyhole. The sheer pleated skirt is the final touch of trend in one gorgeous long gown available in sizes 00 – 24.

La Femme V neck pleated formal dress

La Femme’s pleated dress incorporates irregular pressed pleats for fullness in the A line skirt. The beautiful lace bodice is lined with tan sheer fabric on both front and back. Lace frames what appears to be an open back, but sheer inserts actually provide full coverage. There’s a lovely juxtaposition of history and edge in this evening gown.

My final long pleated dress choice looks to Mariano Fortuny for inspiration. Fortuny worked in Venice to create his trademark pleated confections during the beginning of the 20th Century. The flowing pleats were inspired by Classical art and adored by fashionable figures in Europe and North America. Mon Cheri’s one shoulder pleated dress brings this look to the 21st Century. The floor length satin gown features pleats on the bodice front and skirt, embellished with rhinestones at the side, and of course, in its asymmetrical back straps. What a gorgeous dress for spring formals or prom!
