Queen Victoria’s white wedding dress was landmark in 1840.

Queen Victoria, Franz Xaver Winterhalter, 1847

She chose white to showcase hand made English lace (thereby promoting a local industry). Creating a truly white fabric was an expensive process at that time, but it created perfect background to the lace.  In Victoria’s day, wealthy and influential families often chose wedding gowns embellished with gold or silver thread for their brides. Until World War II, most people married in their best or “Sunday” clothes.  Even Victoria modified her wedding dress through the years to reflect changing trends.

What goes around, comes around, they say.  Choosing a wedding dress that can be worn at other occasions is a growing trend. Whether for fashion, frugality, or the fun of wearing your wedding dress on your anniversary, check out these white dresses.

White One Shoulder Wedding Dress by Terani at PromGirl

For the bride whose wedding plans include fashion forward, sophisticated details, this one shoulder white formal dress by Terani would be a perfect choice.  An overskirt gracefully drapes over the mini dress, highlighting your legs. An asymmetric open back continues the visual interest, highlighted by broken glass beading that embellishes the shoulder strap and skirt. Terani blends the timeless with targeted fashion trends in this dress available not just in white, but in red, black and aqua.  This dress looks great at the alter or at a gala or formal occasion.

La Femme strapless beaded wedding dress at PromGirlFor the bride who loves the strapless dress, La Femme’s sequin open back dress captures charm and fashion. The sweetheart neckline and angled empire waistline create a flowing long dress. Can you imagine an outdoor or destination wedding with the bride dressed in this?  Gorgeous. LaFemme sells this dress in a rainbow of colors, so your wedding dress doesn’t have to be white, either.

White lace sleeveless cocktail dress at PromGirlWhite on white creates a classic wedding look in a short lace dress.  A keyhole back and decorative zipper give it the modern edge, but here is a dress you could easily wear for your “Sunday best” after the wedding day.  The sweetheart neckline and shorter lining add to the intrigue. If it worked for Queen Victoria, it can work for any bride.
